ya: a Sanskrit letter representing the soul.

yajña (Sanskrit word meaning “sacrifice”): oblation in fire; sacrifice.

yaksha: deity in charge of protecting wealth in Hindu mythology.

yama (Sanskrit word meaning “restraint”): self-discipline, restraint; the first limb of Patañjali’s ashtanga yoga system.

Yama: the god of death in Hindu mythology.

Yamuna: one of the three holy rivers of India.

Yashoda: the mother of Krishna.

yoga (Sanskrit word meaning “yoking”): to perceive the constant union, unity, or copulation with the divine self in every breath, in every moment, in every activity, and in every achievement. Yoga is the way one can perceive divinity manifested in the whole universe as well as in the entire body.

yoga maya: Sanskrit word meaning mother nature.

yoga nidra: in Sanskrit yoga means oneness of body and soul, and nidra means sleep. But yoga nidra does not mean sleep; it is constant awareness of the inner Self or conscious samadhi.

Yoga Sutras: the classical treatise on yoga by sage Patañjali.

yogi: Sanskrit word meaning one who is constantly united with the supreme Self.

yogic: pertaining to yoga.

yoni (Sanskrit word meaning “holder”): the place of origin, of procreation; womb; progeny.

yudha: Sanskrit word meaning war; battle; fight.

Yudhishthira: one of the five Pandava brothers; he was the first son of Kunti, born mystically through union with the god Dharma (truth).

yuga: Sanskrit word meaning age, era.
