Avebury has been in use for over 5500 years. It is a huge site, with a deep ditch and bank surrounding several stone circles that were erected in about 2400 BC. Stonehenge would fit inside the smaller of the circles with ease. An avenue of standing stones extends for over a mile before terminating at a sanctuary that was destroyed in 1724.
