The Maha Muni Pagoda in Bagan houses the most sacred object in Myanmar: the sacred Maha Muni image of Buddha. The temple is a replica of the Mahabodhi temple in India. Bagan was founded in the ninth century AD and while there were 13000 pagodas in its heyday now 2217 remain.
