Christianity first arrived in Britain on the orders of Pope Gregory the Great. He saw Angle slaves in the market in Rome and thought they were so beautiful that they should be converted to Christianity. He sent St Augustine with a group of monks who arrived in Kent in 597AD. He was the first archbishop of Canterbury which is the spiritual centre of the Church of England. Pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral has been revived in the twentieth century.
