Ise Jingu Shrine |
|
The Ise Jingu shrine is the Shinto Holy of holies. It has an Inner Shrine (Naiku) and the Outer Shrine (Geku), separated by about two miles, and there are several affiliated shrines and revered buildings. The temples are made from the trees of the Jingu Forest. Pilgrims used to come to visit Ise Jingu and thank the gods for helping them remain in good health. A visit there was originally known as a pilgrimage of gratitude, okage-mairi in Japanese. The site is reached by crossing the Isuzu River.
