Buddha left his body and entered mahaparinirvana here at Kusinara. The Buddha exhorted his disciples not to grieve when he realized that his final exit was approaching. "The nature of things dictates that we must leave those dear to us. Everything born contains its own cessation." This temple was built by the Government in 1956. However, excavation has shown that the hall was rectangular with an entrance facing west and had a barrel-vaulted roof.
