Maya Devi Temple Lumbini

Lumbini, as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, is one of the four main pilgrimage sites of Buddhism. The others being Bohdgaya, Sarnath and Kusinara. Maya Devi gave birth to him while taking rest under a sal tree in Lumbini in the month of May on her way to her parents’ home in Devadaha. She is said to have bathed in the Puskarni pool. The Indian Emperor Ashoka, erected one of his commemorative pillars at Lumbini.
