Mud Mosque at Djenné

Djenné, was also known as a center of Islamic learning and pilgrimage, attracting students and pilgrims from all over West Africa. The first huge mosque was built by Koy Konboro in 1240, who converted to Islam and destroyed his palace to create the mosque. A smaller mosque was built by the fundamentalist Islamic warrior-king Cheikou Amadou who let the large mosque fall into disrepair. The present mosque was completed in 1907 and is made from mud and palm wood. Once a year the city stops working and helps to renovate the mosque.
