Newgrange |
|
There is debate about the purpose of Newgrange, the modern name for the ancient site of Brugh na Boinne, (the House of the Boyne). This remarkable megalithic monument may be a burial tomb, a sacred temple or astrological observatory. What is certain is that Newgrange is aligned to the mid-winter sunrise so that the beam of the rising sun falls directly into the chamber and illuminates carvings within. There are large standing stones surrounding and inside the monument carved with spirals, zigzags and other shapes.
