Sarmizegetusa is a huge site consisting of a fortress and a sacred site built by the pre-Roman Dacian civilization. The sacred zone is east of the fortress. Ten rectangular sanctuaries and a large stone altar, were discovered. There is also a large circular temple that perhaps served as an astronomical instrument. The site was probably chosen due to its proximity to the Dacian sacred mountain of Cogaionon.
