Wat Phra Kaeo

Adjoining the Grand Palace in Bangkok, which covers 945,000 square meters, is The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, (Wat Phra Kaeo). The entrance is guarded by mythical monsters - half human-half birds, saber-toothed giants and guardian lions - all gilded and finely inlaid with pieces of colored glass.

When the small statue of the Buddha was found in 1434 it was covered in stucco and after some years the plaster began to crumble and the Buddha, carved from a single block of jadeite, made itself known. It is seated high up in its special robes that are changed by the King three times a year. It is linked to miracles and is the most sacred object in Thailand. In the interior cloister there is a long and beautiful mural depicting scenes from the Ramayana
