Nazca Lines

Descibed as the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world, the Nazca lines cover 35 miles of desert and range from abstract shapes, concentric circles, to rectangles and wavy lines as well as animals including most famously a hummingbird, monkey, heron, whale, and spider. There is considerable debate about how they were constructed with such a high degree of accuracy when they can only be effectively seen from an airplane. Their purpose is unknown but they could have been used for ritual purposes. Indeed, an abandoned city, called Cahuachi, has recently been discovered, near to the lines. It was built by the Nazca tribe up to 2000 years ago and was a place of ritual and ceremony.
