Taru Menyan Tree

The village of Trunyan is renowned for leaving its dead unburied near to the sacred Taru Menyan tree which has a fragrant smell so sweet that it was said to have lured the goddess Dewi from heaven. The practice of leaving the dead by the tree is said to have started when a leader of the village lost his sense of smell and hoped that sitting amongst decomposing corpses would restore his smell. It didn’t work but he did smell one scent: the tree’s fragrance.
