The Sacred Forest of Zaipobly

This is a surviving 12 hectare island of forest near the village of Zaïpobly. At the beginning of the 20th Century it was a uniform forest, but over-exploitation has reduced it to the present size and it only survived because it was considered to be sacred. It is part of the Taï National Park and it was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978 and was placed on the Natural World Heritage List in 1982. Picture from www.grain.org.
