Ekanath
(1533-1599)
was a unique combination of poet, infused with bhakti (devotion),
and a scholar, greatly versed in jñana (knowledge).
Much loved for
his legendary patience and tolerance, he never felt the least anger or
irritation towards people who tried to offend him.
He was part of the
extraordinary galaxy of poet-saints to
have emerged in the state of Maharashtra in central India
between
the 13th and 17th
century. His illustrious compatriots numbered among others
Jñanadev,
Namdev, Sheik Mohammed, Damaji, Gora Kumbar,
Samartha
Ramdas, and Chokha Mela.
