Eisai Zenji
(1141
– 1215) was
a Zen master. He founded the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism in
1191,
the first of the three
schools (with Soto, founded by Dogen, and
Obaku, founded by Ingen) of Zen Buddhism recognized in Japan.

He traveled twice to China. On his second journey he received
the dharma transmission from master Hsü-an,
and brought back the Ch'an teachings to Japan... as well as tea seeds and
the rites of the tea ceremony.
