Holy Animals

Not all saints are in human form...

The Puranas recount the story of the elephant Gajendran who was saved by the Lord due to its great faith in Him. Tradition also tells how Lord Shiva was worshipped by a spider (sri), a snake (kala), and an elephant (hasti) in the Sri Kalahasti temple; a crab in the Tiruvisanallur temple; an elephant in the Tiruvanaikaaval temple; and an ant in the Tiruverumbur temple.

Saint Francis of Assisi was well known for preaching to animals, and to being followed by a flock of birds forming a cross-shape in the sky.

Lord Buddha narrated many of his previous incarnations in the form of animals, as found in the Jataka Tales for instance.
