Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1174)
was a revolution all in herself: as abbess, visionary, doctor, poet,
composer, artist and religious reformer, she touched all aspects of life.

She had
a series of twenty-six visions, which she described over a period of ten
years, at the instruction of her confessor, in a book titled
Scivas—a
mystical summary of the soul's journey.

Her name in German means "the guard (gard) of
the battle (hild)".
