Lao
Tzu
(a Chinese word
meaning "old sage"): born Li Erh in the sixth century BCE, virtually
nothing is known of his life. According to legend he was keeper of the
archives at the imperial court.

At age eighty,
disillusioned that no one was willing to follow the path to natural
goodness, he set out toward what is now Tibet. At the border, a guard
recognized him and asked him to record his teachings. Lao-tzu composed
the
Tao Te Ching
("The Way and Its Power") before riding away on his water
buffalo (as depicted above), never to be seen again.
