Meister
Eckhart (1260-1327/8) was one of the greatest German mystics. A Dominican
preacher, he taught that as a soul we are a spark of God, and that we are
to retreat from the world and practice inner contemplation in order to
reunite this spark with God.

Originally admired for his uncommon
views, he was later accused of heresy, and was made to recant many of
his teachings. He was the author of a great body of treatises, sermons,
and sayings, most of them lost today. Some collections of
Selected Writings can be
found.
Meister means
"the master" in German.
