Thomas Merton

"Prayer and love are learned in the hour when prayer becomes impossible and your heart has turned to stone."

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was an American writer and Trappist monk. A very engaged monk for social causes, he traveled extensively to the far east. Below is a photo of him with the Dalai Lama.

Thomas Merton wrote over seventy books on poetry, social criticism, peace, social justice and ecumenism. His most famous book is his autobiographical The Seven-Story Mountain.
