The Virgin Mary

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to Your word.”
–  Luke 1:38

Mother Mary (1st century CE) was a humble Jewish peasant woman who received the annunciation from the archangel Gabriel that she was to give birth to the son of God while remaining a virgin. At that time, Mary was already engaged to Joseph, a carpenter, who believed in the holy virginity of Mary after a prophetic dream came to him.

According to some, the meaning of her name comes from the Latin mariam meaning "bitterness", while others speculate it came from the Egyptian root mr meaning "love."
