Namdev (1270 - 1350 CE) is one of
several poet-saints of the bhakti (devotional) movement which
spread throughout North India between the 12th and 17th century.

Married before the age of eleven, he spent most of his time in devotions
and chanting sabdas (hymns) of his own composition. In the company
of Jñanadeva and other saints, he roamed about the country Sixty-one of
his hymns came to be included in the Sikh Scripture, the
Guru Granth
Sahib.

He was part of the
extraordinary galaxy of poet-saints to
have emerged in the state of Maharashtra in central India
between
the 13th and 17th
century. His illustrious compatriots numbered among others
Jñanadev,
Ekanath, Sheik Mohammed, Damaji, Gora Kumbar,
Samartha Ramdas, Chokha Mela, and
Tukaram.
