Maria
Skobtsova (1891–1945) was a Russian Orthodox nun, born in Riga, Latvia.
She escaped Bolshevik repression by going to France, where she dedicated
herself totally to caring and loving the poorest among the poor.

Arrested in 1943
by the Nazis Paris, she was sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she
consoled fellow inmates with her unshakable faith and love for Christ.
She voluntarily went to the gas chamber in 1945, in order to accompany and
prepare her companions for death.
