Saint Francis of Assisi
Born:
Francesco Bernadone

"Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

Francis of Assisi (1181/82 - 1226) was the son of a wealthy trader who spent a dissolute youth. One day as he was praying in the ruined church of St. Damian, the figure on the cross spoke these words to him: "Go and rebuild my Church." Francis walked away from all wealth and status to preach a life of purity and simplicity.

He gradually attracted many followers, and organized them in three orders: the Minor Brothers, the Poor Ladies (under the direction of St. Claire of Assisi), and the Third Order for lay people.
