St. Matthew the Apostle

“And when he had sent the multitudes away, he [Jesus] went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.”
- Matthew 14:23

St. Matthew (1st century C.E.) was one of the original twelve disciples, or apostles, of Jesus Christ. He was a reformed tax-collector (publican).

A Jew, his name in Hebrew was Mattityahu, which means “Gift of YHWH.” He is the attributed author of the first Gospel of the New Testament, which he wrote for the Jewish population.
