St. Teresa of Avila
Born:
Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada

“The time will come when we shall realize that all we have paid has been nothing at all by comparison with the greatness of our prize.”

St. Theresa of Avila (1515-1582) was a great mystic and reformer of the Carmel order in Spain. She was a mentor and close friend of St. John of the Cross.

Her major works are The Way of Perfection, and Interior Castle. She is one of only three women to have been made Doctors of the Church, along with St. Catherine of Sienna and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Her name comes from the Greek therizein, "to harvest."
