Lake Baikal
|
|
Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake in the world and is known as the Holy Sea, Sacred Lake, and Spiritual Waters by native tribes. An old Siberian song refers to it as “Ye glorious sea, ye sacred Baikal.” Shamans from the local tribes consider water to be a traveling way for the spirits. The biggest island on Baikal is Olkhon Island and is a sacred place for Buryats, especially the lone birch, "shaman tree" or ongonmodon.
