The Ganga river is considered sacred because it originated from the spiritual world and because it touched the toe of Vamanadeva, the incarnation of Vishnu. It meets the Yamuna and the (now invisible) Saraswati rivers at Allahabad which is where the Kumbha Mela, the largest religious festival on earth, takes place every twelve years.
