River Isuzu

The Isuzu river is a boundary between the sacred and the profane for worshippers at the Shinto holy of holies – the Ise Jingu shrine.

You enter the grounds of the sanctuary through two large gates (torii) standing at the both sides of the river.  Pilgrims bathe for purification in the river at Mitarashi.
