River Kaveri

The small well depicted below is the source of the river Kaveri (also spelt Cauvery).  On Sankaramana day, in October, many pilgrims come to witness the well fizzing and bubbling as though it is boiling which symbolizes the Goddess Kaveri, the manifestation of the water aspect of mankind.

Kaveri was the daughter of King Kavera and was a gift from Lord Brahma.  She married Agastya, a powerful sage, who placed her in a jug.  A drought struck the land and in answer to the prayers of the people Ganesh, disguised as a cow, sat on the pot and knocked it over.  Kaveri poured forth.
