In a small grotto called Massabiele on the bank of the river Gave de Pau at Lourdes Mother Mary appeared 18 times as a white robed lady to 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous between February 11th and July 16th, 1858. It is the most visited shrine in all Christendom. Pilgrims believe the waters have healing properties.
