| Bala Bhagavatam. by Chinmayananda, Swami and Naik, Kumari Bharati. Mumbai, India: Central Chinmaya Mission Trust. 2000. | A beautiful book for children, which deals with the childhood stories of Lord Krishna, full of pranks, mischief and meaningful adventures and purposeful jokes. The ever-smiling, never-weeping Krishna should be the ideal for the modern world of children everywhere. The child, who has been nurtured, in his early days, upon these stories, cannot easily be victimized by the confusions of the age around us. |
| Bala Ramayana. by Chinmayananda, Swami and Naik, Kumari Bharati. Mumbai, India: Central Chinmaya Mission Trust. 2000. | This book especially written for children awakens in one a sense of beauty and wonder. The language is lyrical - the sentences are short and crisp and the style is racy. The story of Sri Rama is not just narrated as an ancient tale full of sound and fury signifying nothing. The narration is interspersed with descriptions of the sights and sounds of nature. |
| Beyond the Roots: An Anthology on Oriya Short Stories. by Das, Kishori Charan. New Delhi, India: National Book Trust. 1996. | Little known beyond Orissa, India, this is a collection of quality short stories about the spiritual path, interwoven with wisdom: "Don't trouble me please."; "But who troubles whom, may I know Sujata?; "Who are you? Who am I? You are there inside the others, and inside me too; And all others, troubling me, are within you. So when you talk of my troubling you, it amounts to my troubling myself, besides you." |
| Book of Sindibad, the. by Comparetti, Domenico. London, England: The Folk-Lore Society. 1882. | Also known as the Book of the Seven Sages, this is a collection of Portuguese folk tales. |
| Book of Virtues: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories, the. by Bennett, William J. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster. 1993. | A curious collection. Be warned however that you will not find much compassion or love here. These tales were designed to instill the fear of God, parents and authority in children in order to make them well-behaved. |
| British Folk Tales and Legends. by Briggs, Katherine M. London: Routledge. 1977. Pantheon Books, 1980. (Found on DealPilot.com) | While this volume is not specific to Galloway it does give a range of traditional tales which are split up into different categories. This is an interesting book to dip into to give background information or a more national angle to some of our tales. |
