Tukaram
(1608-1649) was an itinerant ascetic and the greatest devotional poet in
the Marathi language.
Rameshwar, a contemporary disciple,
declared that "in jnana (knowledge), bhakti (devotion), and
vairagya (dispassion) there was no one to match Tukaram".

He was part of the
extraordinary galaxy of poet-saints to
have emerged in the state of Maharashtra in central India
between
the 13th and 17th
century. His illustrious compatriots numbered among others
Jñanadev,
Namdev, Ekanath, Damaji, Gora Kumbar,
Samartha
Ramdas, and Chokha Mela.
